Seeing as our team is spread across three continents, it’s rare to find any of us in the same place at the same time.

So when Alec Pender was in the UK for a couple of weeks this summer, it felt rude not to show him some of the sights and sounds that England’s rolling hills have to offer; namely the FlatSix show at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Created by Jay McToldridge, the man behind the iconic Players Classic event at the same location, FlatSix is an ode to one of his favourite brands: Porsche. Don’t expect anything on the same outrageous scale as Players though, because FlatSix is a smaller, cosier and more intimate affair.

As you emerge from behind the tree-lined paddocks on your way in You’re greeted by the sound of flat-six engines screaming for their lives out of the final chicane and onto Goodwood’s main straight. The main attraction for the event is the track time, because while looking at parked Porsches is all well and good, nothing beats seeing them used as intended.

FlatSix is more of a cars and coffee event on a large scale as opposed to a small car show, that’s because any Porsche is permitted to go on display – not just pre-selected cars.

It makes for a wide variety of cars on show, from 986 Boxsters and 996-era 911s wearing the signs of decades of daily-driving to pristine G-bodies and 964s with paint clearer and wheels brighter than your future parked on the Goodwood lawn.

While trade stands at an event often disappoint, the selection at FlatSix did their part by bringing out some achingly-cool metal, including 993 and 996 race cars; a delight to the eyeballs.

The biggest shock to the senses came in the form of this stunning Carrera GT being sent around the motor circuit, putting in lap after lap – even sideways – in the rain.

What sort of madman does that? The type who has a Carrera GT with over 70,000 miles (112,000km) on the clock, regularly taking it on road trips through Europe. What a hero.

For a chilled event with a nice vibe, at a gorgeous location, you’ll spend far worse Sunday mornings than at FlatSix; it’s a show that’s definitely worth adding to your list.
