What defines automotive tuning? For some, it’s about finding a tenth of a second on the track. For others, it’s about expressing their personal taste and character on the canvas that is a car. The purpose, preferences, and approaches to automotive tuning vary widely.
Despite terrible weather, R’s Meeting 2026, held at Fuji Speedway last Saturday, was the perfect place to see that diversity firsthand. Among the hundreds of Nissan Skyline GT-Rs gathered at the annual event, a wide variety of wheels reflected the individuality and character of their owners. But of all the wheels I saw, one brand stood out above the rest: RAYS.
I don’t need to tell you that RAYS is one of Japan’s leading wheel manufacturers, and I definitely won’t need to introduce you to its most iconic model, the Volk Racing TE37. After all, this timeless six-spoke wheel has been around since 1996. Yes, three decades – hence the special 30th Anniversary models released this year.
The TE37 has evolved beyond being just a wheel – it has become an icon of Japanese automotive tuning and culture. Its forged, lightweight construction, high rigidity, and function-driven design are just as revered today as they were when the wheel emerged during the golden age of Japanese performance tuning.
What’s interesting is how the same TE37 can create an entirely different impression depending on the car it’s fitted to. Today, there are numerous versions – from the SAGA to the TE37V and everything in between – and factors such as wheel size and offset, ride height and stance, and even tire choice can all influence a car’s overall image.
The other RAYS wheels I saw at R’s Meeting – and there were a lot – each had their own distinct designs and purposes, yet they all shared a common philosophy: the pursuit of both performance and aesthetics.
With their builds, some GT-R owners sought to preserve the balance of OEM or OEM+, some chased ultimate performance, while others simply wanted to create something truly unique, unlike anything else on the road.
Circling back to my original question: what defines automotive tuning? I don’t think there’s a single right answer, and perhaps that’s a part of its appeal. RAYS doesn’t offer a definitive answer either. Instead, it provides a sense of direction and opens up new possibilities for those looking to find their own.
The countless cars and wheels seen at R’s Meeting 2026 once again demonstrated this philosophy. Even when starting with the same brand and, in many cases, the same design, the stories that emerge are always different.
