For four decades, on and off, Lake Wörthersee in southern Austria has hosted Europe’s ultimate automotive gathering – a celebration of the humble Volkswagen Golf and the VAG culture that grew around it.
Over the years, the event became increasingly controversial, facing resistance from local authorities over modified cars with loud exhausts, overcrowded roads, and public nuisance concerns. Then there was the growing environmental scrutiny. In 2023, the municipality of Maria Wörth, which had hosted the official GTI-Treffen in Reifnitz since 1982, announced it would no longer support the iconic Volkswagen gathering following a three-year hiatus due to other global factors. It seemed like the end of the Wörthersee meet. Or so we thought.
For the next few years, the spirit of Wörthersee lived on elsewhere. In 2024, Volkswagen hosted its own festival in Wolfsburg, while XS Car Night – which had been running events alongside Volkswagen at Wörthersee for years – brought the atmosphere of the automotive pilgrimage to destinations such as Italy and Croatia. Then, in 2025, XS Car Night spearheaded the return of the Wörthersee GTI-Treffen after a five-year absence, this time without the official backing of Maria Wörth.
A lot had changed since the last official GTI-Treffen in 2019. Social media had become even more influential within car culture, more automotive events around the world had gained greater international recognition, and Ultrace had emerged as Europe’s tuning event for a new generation of enthusiasts. The unofficial return of Wörthersee arrived in a very different landscape.
Perhaps, though, the five-year break was exactly what the event needed – a chance to cool tensions from years of controversy. Now that the culture has returned to Wörthersee, it’s time to party like it’s 1982.
The 2026 Wörthersee weekend began under absolutely dreadful weather, with rain drenching the region almost nonstop until Saturday. Even so, hotspots such as Turbokurve, the Eni Service Station Mischkulnig, and the former official Volkswagen gathering point in Reifnitz were packed with Volkswagens and a variety of other enthusiast cars. Better-prepared attendees pitched tents to escape the rain, turning the area into a rolling social gathering filled with music and good vibes.
Thankfully, the weather cleared on Saturday and Sunday, revealing the Alps and allowing everyone to enjoy the weekend properly. Lawn chairs lined the sidewalks, and the atmosphere finally felt complete. This is the true Wörthersee experience.
After seeing it firsthand, I understand why so many German car events prioritise atmosphere over competition. With more than 40 years of tradition behind it, the GTI-Treffen has shaped an entire generation’s idea of what a car meet should be. Here, it’s all about keeping the good vibes rolling.
The most mind-blowing thing about Wörthersee is its sheer scale. You can’t escape the atmosphere. Wherever you drive, you’ll see modified and unique cars parked up or cruising past. Even during an early-morning drive through the alpine roads around Villach, I found the Wörthersee spirit 1,732 metres above sea level. Nobody on summer tyres seemed particularly bothered by the snow at that altitude.
For Jeffrey Li, owner of the B2 Passat, this marked his second trip to Wörthersee, having visited in 2019. I already admired the commitment, but I was even more shocked to discover that both cars were running semi-slicks. Absolutely crazy. Another group of enthusiasts from Mexico unfortunately had their cars stranded at the Port of Rotterdam, but stories like these prove that the spirit of Wörthersee is alive and well.
The 2026 Wörthersee GTI Meet was, for the most part, received positively. Many attendees cited a return to the “good old days,” praising the more relaxed atmosphere and noticeably reduced chaos.
However, given the event’s enormous scale, there’s no way I can cover everything in a single story. So, stay tuned for part two, where I’ll focus on the main event of the week: the XS Car Night Wörthersee Edition.
