There are some things you don’t often see here in Malaysia, such as a gathering of Kyusha – or Japanese classic cars – going out for a morning drive.

On 14th September 2025, Backwheels B*tches, a Kaido Racer-themed car group, organised a small drive. The destination? A newly opened highway – the EKVE – 30 minutes outside of Kuala Lumpur (KL); a stretch of road connecting two major outskirt districts.

5:30 AM
The air was cold in downtown KL. The group gathered at a local skate park, their chosen meeting point, and with just a few text messages, more and more friends started arriving.

Soon, around 13 cars were lined up, joined by other Kaido Racers and Kyusha teams. Friends from Kasor, Axle Garage, and Kurogarage showed up too, even though none of them were exactly morning people.

6:30 AM
Engines fired up. The burble of old carbureted motors filled the morning air. Leading the pack was brother Aan in his stunning red Datsun 240Z.

As we cruised through downtown Kuala Lumpur, the sound of these beautiful machines made me wonder – was this what our fathers felt, driving these cars back in the day? It must have been just as special for them.

7:15 AM
We reached the first toll booth; the start of the newly opened highway. After clearing it, we pulled over to regroup. Some took out their phones to capture the moment, while others chatted, catching up after months apart.

The weather was still cold, fog drifted in the distance, and the sun slowly began to rise.

7:30 AM
Back into our machines, we hit the open road. The atmosphere was unreal – fog blanketing the highway, the sun barely peeking over the horizon, and a convoy of Kyusha enjoying every second of it.

I rode shotgun in my own car, a 1981 Nissan Bluebird 910 SSS, snapping photos to freeze this rare moment in time.

8:00 AM
At the end of the highway, the group dispersed. Some went for breakfast, some headed home to their families, while others kept driving just to stretch the morning a little longer.

It wasn’t a long drive – just a quick morning run with good friends. But for me, it was a sight I hope to capture again.
