When people think of Hong Kong’s car culture, an image that usually comes to mind is supercars and hypercars weaving through the city streets, or JDM machines being pulled over. But would you believe that within the bustling city, there is a weekly Cars and Coffee event?

Originally called the PitStop, the gathering was rebranded as The Morning Joint in February 2025. It’s here on Sunday mornings that coffee, cars, and the Hong Kong automotive community intersect at Wood Road in the southeast of Wan Chai. The commercial area, though small, offers a quiet atmosphere that makes for the perfect backdrop for enthusiasts to connect.

I don’t drink coffee myself, but it’s a ritual for many. While the freshly brewed coffee scent fills the air, the real draw for me is the diversity of the automobiles. A Suzuki Cappuccino one week, a Lotus 340R the next, or even a Porsche 997 3.8 GT3 RS. For someone who has always been socially awkward, the gathering is surprisingly welcoming and relaxing.

I first discovered the event on Instagram back in October 2025, but I was hesitant to attend, partly because it starts at 8:00am, and partly because I wasn’t sure I’d fit in.

By December, I finally worked up the courage to go. When I first arrived, I saw a breathtaking Aston Martin N430 in Skyfall Silver parked diagonally to the cafe. I was mesmerized, and before long I was greeted by Enzo – not the Ferrari, one of The Morning Joint’s organizers – who introduced me to the host. Their warmth made me feel at home and at ease.

That morning left a lasting impression, and since then, I have tried to return every Sunday.

By the second visit, I was comfortable chatting with owners and enthusiasts. This not only lets me practice photography but also allows me to build a network. One remarkable moment was when I got to join the shooting of two Lotus Emira FEs. That pivotal moment pushed me to pursue shoots and fulfill my dream of becoming a freelance photographer. I walked away not only satisfied but inspired.

I enjoy being pushed beyond my comfort zone, and The Morning Joint has helped me grow socially, build strong connections through cars, and make friends of all ages. This is undeniable proof that Hong Kong’s car culture is far richer than the common preconception, and that the community can be found in the most unexpected places.

For readers all around the world, I hope this reminds you that passion can be found anywhere.
